Transparent fill

To make a portion of design transparent so that the layers underneath show, drag the transparent swatch from the quick colors panel on the bottom left and drop it on the color you want to make transparent.

 

In this example, after the background color of the top layer is made transparent, the pattern in the layer below shows to merge beautifully.
